One Man's Ghost - A.K.A. "The 8000 mile song"
Omaha, NE USA - Omaha-based band, Malnack has just completed a single, "One Man's Ghost." The project was dubbed “The 8000 mile song,” because the collaboration spanned two continents and the total distance between collaborators added up to more than 8000 miles. The sessions occurred exclusively over the internet, using eSession.com.
Work began on the project in March, 2008 with Brent Malnack recording a demo with vocalist Mars Booth.
The demo was then sent to Dishwalla bassist Scot Alexander based in Boise, Idaho. Alexander created a bass part for the song that was added to the mix and sent on to studio drummer and percussionist, Tony Morra in Nashville, Tennessee. Morra's drum part was comprised of 22 separate tracks. The drums were rough mixed and sent back to Scot Alexander, who modified the bass part to lock into Tony Morra's drum parts.
Next, a rough mix was uploaded to guitarist, David Rainger (Annie Lennox) in the UK. Rainger added six guitar tracks. A rough mix of all of the parts to date was sent to former Jellyfish member Chris Manning (mixed Santana's Supernatural disc) in San Francisco, California. He gave production guidance to the Omaha team. Brent added 12-string guitar and two synth parts.
A friend of the band in Treynor, Iowa named Jenna Purdy added some vocals and then Mars performed the main vocal and three tracks of backup vocals. Finally, all 37 tracks of material were sent to Chris Manning for the mixing/production/mastering process. On 12 June, 2008, Chris completed the final mix of One Man's Ghost.
The song is currently available on Amazon.com and iTunes. It can also be found on YouTube here.
